Ultimate Asheville Travel Guide: Best Things to Do and See
If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to a place where mountain views meet quirky charm, Asheville, North Carolina, is your next must-visit destination. I spent a whole month soaking up everything this funky, artsy, and nature-filled paradise has to offer, and let me tell you—it’s a solo traveler’s dream. Whether you want to dive into the arts scene, explore the great outdoors, or just enjoy a peaceful sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has you covered.
Why Asheville is a Solo Female Traveler’s Haven
First off, Asheville is safe, friendly, and filled with fellow adventurers. Locals are warm and welcoming, and the downtown area is walkable, making it easy to navigate solo with loads of parking. Plus, there’s an ever-present community of artists, musicians, and nature lovers, meaning you’ll never really feel alone (unless you want to, of course).
Must-Do Activities in Asheville
1. Get Lost in Downtown Asheville
Wander through Downtown Asheville, where every corner is bursting with unique boutiques, funky street art, and coffee shops that will make you question your caffeine limits. Grab a pastry from Old Europe Pastries and people-watch in Pritchard Park (bonus points if you catch the drum circle on Friday nights!).
2. Cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway
If you’re up for a scenic drive (spoiler: you absolutely must be when you go to Asheville), take a day to explore the many stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway. My top stops? Black Mountains Overlook, the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center, and Haw Creek Overlook—each one more stunning than the last. If you aren’t sure where to start, check out the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center and Park Store, a one-stop to learn about the entire 469 miles and history of the Parkway.
3. Pamper Yourself at the Omni Grove Park Inn
Treat yourself to a sunset dinner at the Omni Grove Park Inn, because nothing says “I love myself” like a delicious meal and a panoramic mountain view. Beyond the dining experience, the hotel’s grand architecture and historic charm make it a must-visit, even if you're not staying overnight. If you’re in the mood to splurge, their spa is one of the best in the country, offering eucalyptus-infused steam rooms, heated waterfall pools, and the ultimate relaxation vibes. Even just wandering through the lobby and terraces is a treat—especially when the firepits are glowing on a crisp evening.
4. Take a Day Trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park
If you have a day and are up for a lot of driving, hiking, and relaxing, embark on a day trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country, with mist-covered peaks, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls. Hike to Clingmans Dome for sweeping panoramic views, explore Cades Cove for a chance to spot wildlife like black bears and deer, or take a scenic drive along Newfound Gap Road. Whether you want to challenge yourself on a rugged trail or simply find a peaceful spot to soak in the mountain air, this national park is an unforgettable experience.
5. Tap Into Your Artsy Side
The Asheville Art Museum is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates creativity and culture. Featuring a mix of contemporary and Appalachian artwork, the museum offers thought-provoking exhibits that highlight both regional and international artists. With rotating exhibitions and interactive installations, you’ll always find something new and inspiring to admire.
If you prefer a more immersive and hands-on art experience, the River Arts District is where Asheville’s creative heart beats the loudest. This vibrant area is home to hundreds of working artists, from painters and potters to metal sculptors and glassblowers. Wander through open studios, chat with local artists, and even take part in a workshop to create your own masterpiece—because nothing says “souvenir” like a one-of-a-kind piece you made yourself!
6. Chase Waterfalls at DuPont State Recreational Forest
DuPont State Recreational Forest is a sprawling 12,500-acre wonderland packed with scenic trails, peaceful lakes, and cascading waterfalls.
One of my favorite hikes in Asheville was Triple Falls! It was a moderate trail that rewards you with three distinct cascades tumbling down a rocky mountainside. The view from the upper overlook is breathtaking, and you can also take a short side trail to get closer to the base for a more immersive experience.
A must-do hike is the Three Lakes Trail, which takes you past the tranquil waters of Lake Julia, Lake Dense, and Lake Alford, offering stunning reflections and peaceful spots to rest.
For waterfall lovers, don’t miss Hooker Falls, an easy half-mile hike that leads to a stunning cascade and a perfect swimming hole.
7. Go Full-On Mermaid Mode at Sliding Rock
If you’re feeling brave, take a literal plunge down Sliding Rock, a natural waterslide that will wake you up faster than your morning espresso. This 60-foot smooth rock formation sends you sliding into an eight-foot-deep pool of crisp mountain water. Located in Pisgah National Forest, Sliding Rock is a popular summer attraction, and lifeguards are on duty during peak season. There is a small entrance fee of $5 per person (cash or card), and the best times to visit are early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds.
8. Take a Dip at Skinny Dip Falls
Don’t let the name fool you—clothes are definitely encouraged at Skinny Dip Falls, but the swimming hole is one of the most refreshing spots in Asheville.
9. Marvel at Looking Glass Falls
Easy to access and incredibly photogenic, Looking Glass Falls is one of Asheville’s most famous waterfalls—and for good reason! Located just off U.S. Highway 276, this 60-foot waterfall is one of the most accessible in the area, making it perfect for a quick stop or a longer visit. You can admire the falls from the roadside overlook or take a short set of steps down to the base, where you’ll feel the cool mist on your face.
10. Laugh Your Face Off on the LaZoom Comedy Tour
Hop on the iconic purple bus for the LaZoom Comedy Tour, where local guides (in ridiculous costumes) will take you on a hilariously weird ride through Asheville’s history.
11. Catch a Show at The Grey Eagle Music Hall
For live music lovers, The Grey Eagle is the perfect spot to discover new artists and enjoy an intimate venue with great sound.
12. Catch a Game at an Asheville Tourists Baseball Game
Few things scream classic Americana like a night at the ballpark, and catching an Asheville Tourists game was so much fun. The energy is electric, the crowd is lively, and best of all, it won’t break the bank. I snagged a ticket for just $15 on a Thursday night and scored an amazing seat right behind the visitors’ dugout!
13. Chill Out in Carrier Park
For a slower-paced afternoon, grab a book and a blanket and relax at Carrier Park, one of the city’s best green spaces.
14. Feel Like Royalty at Biltmore Estate
No trip to Asheville is complete without visiting the Biltmore Estate. Whether you tour the mansion, roam the gardens, or just enjoy the scenery, this place is a straight-up fairytale. Read more about my time at the Biltmore here.
15. Unwind at Shoji Spa & Retreat
After all that exploring, treat yourself to some self-care at Shoji Spa & Retreat, a Japanese-inspired wellness oasis nestled in the mountains just outside Asheville. This serene retreat offers private outdoor hot tubs with breathtaking views of the surrounding forest, giving you the ultimate relaxation experience. Indulge in their signature spa treatments, including deep tissue massages and salt scrubs, or simply enjoy the peaceful ambiance of their cedar sauna and cold plunge pools. Whether you're winding down after a long hike or just seeking a quiet escape, Shoji Spa provides a rejuvenating experience unlike any other.
Is Asheville Worth It?
1000% yes. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, Asheville delivers. With its incredible food, stunning scenery, and vibrant arts scene, this mountain town is the perfect place for solo female travelers to explore freely, make new friends, and indulge in some well-deserved me-time.
So, pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to fall head over hiking boots for Asheville.
