Trail of Ten Falls
After what felt like endless days of non-stop rain the clouds took a break and allowed to me venture out for a day of hiking at Silver Falls State Park. I know the rain is one of the key characteristics that makes Oregon…well Oregon but being from Southern California and really only experiencing one season, the rain really brings out my desire to be lazy. I have nothing to complain about because with the rain comes the lush greenery, towering trees, and powerful waterfalls.
I was in nature nirvana.
It is a paradise for hikers, photographers, and lovers of untouched natural landscapes. Considered the jewel of the Oregon State Parks and one of the state’s most notoriously popular attractions, I recommended arriving as early as you can. Due to its convenient access and undeniable beauty, Silver Falls can become (VERY) crowded—especially on weekends and holidays. I was able to hike on Veterans Day, during the wet off-season. I started my hike at 9:30am and there were only 5-6 cars in the parking lot, but when I finished, around 1pm, the entire parking lot was full. The sooner you start, the less people on the trail; the less people you need to worry about being in your photos.
The 8.7 mile loop plays host to 10 of the most unique named (not really) waterfalls. My theory…someone needed to put a presentation together to pitch the names to their boss and completely forgot. They used the obvious location of the falls compared to the others and added their dog’s name, Drake, in there for good measure and to make 10.
Of the 10 waterfalls, four exceed 100 feet, but the best part…Four contain trails that bring hikers behind the cascading curtains of water.
I recommend this hike to any solo, female hiker. I say female hiker because being a solo, female hiker is very different than a solo, male hiker. You’re on a highly trafficked trail, you are bound to cross paths with someone at some point on your hike.
So, I threw on my raincoat and hiking boots, and trudged across the waterlogged earth, taking in all beauty and peace our world has to offer.
