Roanoke River Lighthouse

Sitting gracefully on the waterfront, the Roanoke River Lighthouse is a striking reminder of Edenton’s maritime history. Built in the 19th century, it has been meticulously restored to showcase its former glory. Walking up the spiral staircase, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay, and the rich history of this beacon makes the visit even more meaningful. Whether you’re a history buff or just love beautiful sights, this lighthouse is a must-see.

Spending time here feels like stepping into a different era. You can almost hear the echoes of lighthouse keepers tending to their duties as you explore. The peaceful surroundings make it a fantastic spot to sit and reflect, appreciating the town’s deep connection to the sea and its storied past.

Wandering S. Broad Street

Taking a stroll down gives the dream vibe of a Hallmark movie. The tree-lined avenue is filled with charming boutiques, cozy cafés, and historic buildings that tell the tale of Edenton’s past. With each step, you’ll be transported back in time, admiring the colonial-era architecture and the slower, more intentional pace of life that the town embraces.

Stopping for a pastry at a local bakery or ducking into a boutique to chat with friendly shop owners makes this walk even more special. It’s a great way to connect with the local culture, and the welcoming community makes every visitor feel like they belong. Keep in mind…it’s the south and most places are closed or close early on Sundays.

Edenton Bay Cruises

A boat tour with Edenton Bay Cruises is an incredible experience and something all locals recommend while visiting. A combination of relaxation, history, and stunning scenery. Captain Mark takes passengers on a journey through time, sharing stories about Edenton’s waterfront, its role in early American history, and the wildlife that calls this area home. Whether you’re looking for a daytime excursion or a romantic sunset sail, this boat tour is an unforgettable way to see Edenton from a new perspective.

Edenton Steamers Game

There’s nothing quite like a summer night at an Edenton Steamers baseball game. The small-town spirit fills the air as fans gather to cheer on their team. The energy is contagious, from the crack of the bat to the delicious smell of popcorn and hot dogs wafting through the stands. Even if you’re not a big sports fan, attending a game is a fun way to soak up the community atmosphere. The friendly locals are always happy to chat, and by the end of the game, you’ll feel like a true Edentonian.

Historic Tour through the Edenton Historical Commission

For a deep dive into the town’s colonial past, the Edenton Historical Commission housed in Penelope Barker House Welcome Center gives a great guided tour through various homes and historical monuments around time. Because the town in so small and the tour isn’t very well known, I was the only one on the tour and had a blast with my guide. We whipped around town in the golf cart all afternoon. The knowledgeable guides bring history to life, sharing fascinating stories about the prominent figures who once walked these very streets.

Places on the tour include:

  • Historic 1767 Chowan County Courthouse

  • Edenton Tea Pot

  • James Iredell House

  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church

  • Roanoke River Lighthouse

Plus so much more!!

A Day Trip to Somerset Place State Historic Site and Phelps Lake

Just a short drive from Edenton, Somerset Place is a peaceful and educational stop. This former plantation provides a comprehensive look at both the plantation owners and the enslaved people who lived and worked here. Guided tours are usually offered, but I opted for a self-guided one.

Through the trees next to Somerset Place, follow the path to Phelps Lake for a dose of nature. Along the lake there’s. a pier that jets out about 100 years into the lake and it’s perfect for a dose of peace. The still waters, towering cypress trees, and abundant wildlife make this a perfect spot for a quiet afternoon.

Kayaking on the Perquimans River

If you’re craving an adventure that’s equal parts exhilarating and soul-soothing, grab a kayak and hit the Perquimans River! The moment your paddle dips into the glassy water, you’ll feel a rush of excitement. Towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss create a dreamy canopy overhead, and the occasional fish splashes nearby, reminding you that you're sharing this river with a lively ecosystem. Glide past great blue herons as they take flight and spot sunbathing turtles lazily plopping into the water as you approach—this is nature at its absolute finest!

The guide I booked no longer provides tours, but there are plenty of other places to rent from!

Safety & Solo Travel Perks

Edenton is incredibly safe, with friendly locals always willing to help. Walking around at night feels comfortable, and the town’s small size makes it easy to navigate. Plus, the slower pace is perfect for solo travelers looking to reset, recharge, and reconnect with themselves.
