Nothing says “good morning” like fresh air and local charm! A little north of the San Juan Capistrano city centre is Farmakis Farms, a small, family-owned farm with a delightful Friday farmers market. The Village of Putuidem – A Glimpse Into Indigenous History
Before the Spanish arrived, this land was home to the Acjachemen people. The Village of Putuidem is a historical park dedicated to their culture and legacy. You won’t find grand buildings here—this is a more understated but deeply significant site.
Large engraved boulders throughout the area share pieces of Acjachemen history, including their creation story and spiritual beliefs. One such boulder speaks of Santiago Peak (Kalawpa), where the Acjachemen god Chinigchinich first appeared to the First People. Another highlights the North Star and how elders led ceremonies to honor their ancestors. These elements make Putuidem more than just a park—it’s a living tribute to the land’s first inhabitants.

Mission San Juan Capistrano – $18 Well Spent
The crown jewel of the city, Mission San Juan Capistrano, is an absolute must-see. Founded in 1776, it’s the best-preserved Spanish mission in California. For $18 (adult, $15 for seniors), you get access to the breathtaking ruins of the Great Stone Church, gorgeous gardens, and an inspiring museum detailing the mission’s complex history. With bees buzzing and butterflies dancing among the blossoms, it’s easy to imagine what life might have been like here centuries ago.
Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano – Free and Fabulous
I was missing Europe, so I headed over to the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano. This stunning modern church was built in the 1980s but was modeled after the original 1806 Great Stone Church. It’s free to enter, and the grand dome and intricate artwork inside are worth a quick visit.
Blas Aguilar Adobe Museum – A Hidden Gem (and Free!)
This small but mighty museum is packed with history about the early Californian settlers. The adobe home belonged to Don Blas Aguilar, an early Californio leader, and is one of the oldest residential buildings in the city. If you love learning about old-timey life, this one’s a winner!
Ellie’s Table – Just Here for the Lavender Lemonade
A girl’s gotta hydrate, and Ellie’s Table has the most refreshing lavender lemonade in town. This café is adorable, but today, we’re just grabbing a drink to keep us going. (Mental note: come back for brunch.)

If you love digging through old books, vintage trinkets, and quirky finds, this place is a goldmine. Welcome to the oldest continuously occupied neighborhood in California! Originally home to mission workers and their families, this district still maintains its old-world charm. It’s all easily walkable, making it perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll.
You can grab a coffee at Hidden House Coffee, shop for unique home décor at Nest, or browse handmade jewelry at Las Catrinas. Each business here is locally owned, and many of the buildings date back to the 1700s, giving the whole area a historic, yet vibrant, feel.
